DOCUMENT 02 · WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG
Support
Footman is made by one person. Mail gets read.
Before you write: open Settings, go to Advanced, and press Show in Finder under Diagnostics. Attach the file it selects. It records what Footman has been doing, how fast searches have been and whether anything has failed, never the contents of a clip or a selection, and it usually answers the question without a back and forth.
Getting started
Press the hotkey, which is ⌥Space until you change it, and type. Arrow keys move, Return opens, ⌘1 through ⌘9 jump straight to a row, Escape closes.
Coming from Alfred
If Alfred is installed, the menu bar menu has Import from Alfred…, which brings over every workflow, snippet and custom search in one pass and changes nothing of Alfred's. For a single bundle, open Settings, go to Workflows, and press Import a Workflow. Footman reads it and lists its keywords; nothing runs until you use it, and the first time a workflow would run a script it shows you the script.
Accessibility
Window management needs the Accessibility permission, and so does acting on the selection in another app. Footman asks for it the first time you use one of those, never at launch. Everything else works without it.
Common things
- The hotkey does nothing. Something else has it. Change it in Settings under General; the new combination works without a relaunch.
- A file is not showing up. Footman asks the system index rather than building its own. If Spotlight cannot find it either, add its folder in Settings under Find.
- The wrong thing is first. Footman learns which result you pick for which query. Settings has a button to forget all of that.
- A workflow fails. The diagnostics file carries the script's own error output, which is what its author needs.
- Window commands do nothing. They need the Accessibility permission. Choose Welcome & Permissions from the menu bar menu and press Ask for Access. If the switch is already on and it is still refused, remove Footman from the list and add it again; the same page says how.
